[27 vo] December 1
A visit from Mgr Glorieux and an excellent conversation about the idea, the plan, and the perspectives for his history of theology in the Middle Ages (a project for Desclée).178 He led me to expect, with his usual discretion, a strong intervention by Cardinal Liénart against the schema which is coming under discussion.179
Tonight a conference by Fr de Lubac on Teilhard de Chardin at the cultural center of the Augustinian College. Right in the middle of the Council! Fr de Lubac is not very optimistic about ‘Ottaviani’s Defeat,’ such as L’Espresso headlined it yesterday.180 He confirmed the rumor that Ottaviani wanted to chase Fr Rahner out of Rome. Perhaps also Fr de Lubac and Fr Congar. There was an allusion to this in an article in La Libre Belgique written by an Assumptionist.181 Fr Garrastarin meeting Fr de L[ubac] in a corridor of the {Jesuit]} generalate told him that a bishop had asked him if Fr de Lubac hadn’t left Rome. To which Fr G[arrastarin] answered: ‘Oh no, I saw him this morning in the refectory.’

A good session, said Mgr Rolland, with strong and peaceful criticism of the fundamental ideas of the schema De Ecclesia. An Italian bishop, having made an unkind allusion to those who insinuate that there is error in the church, using a citation from St Paul, provoked unhappy murmuring. ‘The first insult at the Council,’ the American bishop of Hartford [28 ro] told me tonight.182
At two–thirty, following a phone call, I went to see Mgr Hakim and the Melkites (Fr Kéramé) to edit his intervention for tomorrow. The schema completely leaves out the Eastern theology of the Church as mystery and it tumbles into the juridicism of an idea of the Mystical Body that is identical with a visible social body with rights and powers. The same thing is true in its treatment of the episcopacy.183
At five–thirty, I took part in Nuova Italia’s presentation to the public of the Italian translation of the special issue of Esprit. Pro[fessor] Jemolo chaired the meeting. Forcella identified himself as a non–believer deeply interested in the phenomenon of the ‘Council’; M. Rossi spoke about the problem of the laity in the church; and I, from the perspective of a religious sociologist, commented on the meaning of the slogan ‘a pastoral Council.’184

Brilliant conversation with a Polish Catholic intellectual <J. Turowicz> who recently took part in the Study Week for Catholic Intellectuals in Paris on ‘Work and Contemplation.’ He’s from the group Znak. Editor of the journal <Tygodnik Powszechny> linked to this group (50,000 readers). See my notes.185
At noon, I ate with two Brazilian bishops, who confirmed the episode {at the assembly}. At the end of the famous session where Ottaviani’s schema was rejected, Cardinal Ruffini who, like many Brazilian bishops, resides at the Domus Mariae, announced to the thirty or so bishops around him, ‘We have just opened the door to Luther, to rationalism, and to Modernism.’186
Ruffini and Urbani, living at the Domus Mariae, eat by themselves and don’t mix with the other bishops.
